Scottish Opera - Traviata - again!
Scottish Opera announced that international opera director David McVicar is to return to Scotland to direct a new production of La Traviata. The company are asking for specific sponsorship from the public for this. Wonderful news to have David McVicar back - but why does it have to be Traviata?
Scottish Opera demonstrated how innovative they can be when they try, with the recent successful Five:15 (sold out) performaces.
Traviata is ever popular, but it is simply done too often. Why not have David McVicar in to direct a Menotti season for example, now that that composer - so long resident in Scotland - is no longer with us. That would be more a far more forward thinking and dynamic approach.
Perhaps it is bad form to grumble about this, as we should be grateful that we still have a national opera company at all. It is just that I think we need to try to be a bit more artistically ambitious in Scotland.
